Stay in tune

Like a radio when it’s not tuned, our lives sometimes take on too much static. We lose our sense of direction. We hear a lot of voices telling us what to do. But we don’t know which voice is the right one.

How do we get out of tune in life? One way I would say we get out of tune is by having an endless number of distractions, but we lack one singular purposeful mission. In this case, our life is so out of tune that it becomes nothing but static and is not in tune with anything that matters, or has lasting significance. How do we end up running in circles without realizing that our lives have become nothing but static? How do we go from one moment to the next without realizing that no meaningful messages are getting through? Certainly if we’re paying attention to our radio we would know that the steady stream of static indicates that it’s no longer tuned to any particular station. So, maybe we’re no longer paying attention. Maybe we have become so accustomed to the static that we no longer think about it. We embrace the static at the expense of the truth. It takes effort to tune a radio to a station. It doesn’t take any effort to tune it to static.

You’re going about your everyday activities. You go to work, you go to school, you take the kids to school, and you’re doing what you think are all the right things. But at the end of the day, you wonder what it all means. The things you’re doing aren’t bad things. But you’re still left wondering, “What’s it all for?” You’re involved in a ‘rat race’. And it’s called a ‘rat race’ because it’s a race that really has lost its meaning and purpose. You wonder if maybe a hamster running on a wheel is a better illustration. Life has a way of throwing us out of tune without us really realizing it. We are sometimes going in circles and aren’t aware of it until we stop to examine it.

Are you tuned in to a station? Maybe you are tuned in to a station. But maybe it’s not the right station. Maybe you think you’ve found a meaningful and purposeful mission. And maybe it has some value for you and others here and now. But if you are tuned in to something, does it point to truth. Some things can appear meaningful, but they aren’t based on truth. Only what is true will point to eternal significance. The great thing is, when we find that right station, everything we do centers and revolves around it. Think about it this way. Think about having your radio on all day as you go about your day. And your radio is tuned to the right station. Everything you do relates to this station and what it’s saying. And when we stay in tune to it, it gives our life meaning and purpose.

Suffering is the sandpaper of life

I wonder sometimes at the suffering we go through. It can sometimes be hard to understand. We don’t always know the reason for the things we go through. And sometimes suffering involves a minor annoyance. Other times it involves a major trial.

The suffering we go through is different for all of us. It can be a major physical ailment that we go through for an extended period of time. Or it can be a minor ailment we endure for a short period of time. These can be some of the most difficult times we can endure. I’ve been through some of those myself. What I’ve found is that how you look at these things makes all the difference in your outcome. If you look at these as opportunities, then there’s the potential for personal growth. But if you look at them as obstacles and reasons to become bitter and angry, then you can become stuck in that situation. Not only that, but you can end up worse off than you were before.

We don’t often have the ability to choose the things we go through. But we always have the ability to choose how we respond to them. And the response can make all the difference in the world. It can be easy to allow our human emotions to take over. But it’s in fighting those natural tendencies where be begin to gain victory over the situation. There are also other scenarios that don’t necessarily involve a physical malady. Sometimes it can involve another person. In this instance, we may have someone in our lives—at work, a family member, or a neighbor—and they become the source of our trial. In essence, they are our sandpaper. And you may agree that this is more than a metaphor. They may literally have a personality that equates to 80 grit sandpaper. If there’s anybody who knows how to get under your skin, it would be this person. They know how to push all the right buttons. And many times they push those buttons just to get the expected response out of you.
What are the treatments for the price of sildenafil disease? Before treatment the underlying conditions that can cause erectile dysfunction to psychological causes. Patients must consider effective levitra online sales guidelines before the drug administration. There are still ways to turn out to be brand viagra mastercard mindful of. If you are among those people who are cialis 40 mg suffering from some underlying medical condition at the same time.

But one wonders what would happen if you didn’t respond in the expected way. What if, instead of being angry at the situation you began to express gratitude and being thankful for what you do have? And what if, instead of responding to that abrasive person by lashing out you began just being a friend to them. For sometimes those are the people that need friends the most. You would most likely throw them off their game anyway. How do you keep hurling negative remarks after someone who is being so magnanimous? And that circumstance can’t beat you if you choose to respond with a thankful attitude.

I believe that often times we go through a trial in life to help knock some of the rough edges off of us. And some of us need more sanding than others. We can all agree that these things are never fun. And we wish we never had to go through them. But sometimes the results that they produce in us are greater than anything else could have accomplished.

The right voice isn’t always the loudest

There’s something interesting about all the voices speaking out in our society today. It’s the loudest ones that seem to get all the attention. They don’t even have to be right. They just shout and shout until someone responds. I guess it’s the ‘squeaky wheel gets the grease’ kind of thinking.

It tends to be true in any situation in life. The one who makes the most noise gets the most attention. I notice this a lot in customer service with certain companies. They don’t want a big PR nightmare, so if some customer starts making too much noise, they will do whatever they can to appease them, regardless of the validity of the complaint. And I think many times the customer voicing the complaint knows this. They don’t have to be right. They just have to be really loud. They’ll say something like, “I demand customer service!” And they’ll usually get it because the company knows bad news travels fast. Sometimes a customer can be justified in their complaint. But other times a person can just be complaining to take advantage of the situation.

I’ve seen other situations in a work environment. There’s always some who speak the loudest to make their complaints known to their manager. They might not even be complaining. They might just be making sure that management knows about all the ‘hard work’ they’ve been doing. I guess what they’re really doing is advertising for themselves. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t doing the things they say. But there may be a number of other people working just as hard, or harder, who aren’t getting any recognition at all from their manager. They just don’t advertise it. So, some may get recognition they don’t deserve, while others don’t get recognition they do deserve. It’s upside down. I would think managers would usually be able to see through this. But, it seems, often times they don’t.

I would say a good rule of thumb would be to question the loudest voice first. It’s good to ask, “Why do they have to be so loud?” I would think the validity of the argument would speak for itself. Truth doesn’t have to shout. Its strength and power comes from the fact that it is true. A word of truth, calmly spoken, can pierce through the fog of words of confusion. Truth resonates with people when it is heard. It’s like a piano when a hammer lightly taps a string that’s in tune. The hammers speaks and the string says, “Yeah, that’s right.”

It’s for this reason that I think it’s good to examine those loud voices. What’s that voice really saying? Is that really true? If it’s really true, can’t it just be spoken? It doesn’t have to be shouted, does it? So, I say listen for those quiet voices. The ones that aren’t always so noticeable. They are often the ones with the most value and the most truth.

…Let’s go deeper

I think this relates well with how God speaks to us. God speaks to us words of truth. I guess that’s why God knows He doesn’t have to shout. He knows the power of His word. I think that’s why the devil shouts. Because he knows that his arguments are weak. He might be like the angry customer shouting, “I want customer service.” And we can just say, “Sorry, you’re not going to get it. Move on to someone else. Because I’m not buying it.”

AV 1 Kings 19:11-12: “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; [but] the LORD [was] not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; [but] the LORD [was] not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; [but] the LORD [was] not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” This instance was where Elijah was on the run from Jezebel. What Elijah found was that God spoke to Him in ‘a still small voice’. It’s a still small voice because it’s the voice of peace. When God speaks to our hearts there’s a peace that comes with it. And He doesn’t have to shout it. We just know it because it resonates in our hearts.

AV Proverbs 25:11: “A word fitly spoken [is like] apples of gold in pictures of silver.” There’s something about a word of truth, not only spoken to us, but spoken at the right time. Often times God will speak something to us and it’s just what we need to hear right at that moment. Or, He will send someone to us to speak those words at the correct moment. But the value of those words that are spoken are aptly described in this verse in proverbs—like apples of gold in pictures of silver. They have value beyond compare. Because when we hear that word we needed to hear at the right time, they have a precious value to us. And we are so thankful to receive it.

AV John 6:63: “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.” The words Jesus spoke were words to nourish our spirits. The reason they are life is because they are true and they give life unto our spirits. They aren’t for our flesh because our flesh profits nothing.

AV Colossians 3:15: “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” It’s often said, “Let peace be your guide.” That’s good advice. The voice of truth is also the voice of peace. The right direction to take is usually the one we have peace about pursuing. And when God speaks to us there will be a peace that goes along with it. It’s in that still small voice.

AV 1 Kings 19:11-12: “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. Don’t just read…..Study

One of the things I find myself doing is letting my mind wander. And that’s seems to be especially true when I’m reading. I like reading books and learning new things. But staying focused seems to be a challenge for me. It’s been that way ever since I can remember.

I remember when I was in school, sitting in class, I was not very attentive. I didn’t give my full attention to what the teacher had to say. I guess I wasn’t much of an auditory learner. Plus, my mind would be off on other things while they were talking. I would have to say that most of my learning came from reading the text book. I had to depend on my reading for most of my understanding of what was going on in the class. But even then, I would struggle to stay focused. I could read several pages before I realized I wasn’t even paying attention to what I was reading. It’s something how our minds can just get on a thought pattern and then take off in another direction. It’s kind of like my mind thinks this ‘reading thing’ is just some kind of distraction so that it can go off and do whatever it wants. Kind of like running. I get some of my best thinking done while I am running. It’s enough of a no-brainer to provide some physical distraction so that my mind is now free to mull over thoughts and ideas.

But my mind doesn’t seem to understand that that’s not the purpose of reading. When I’m reading I should be actually thinking about what I’m reading. I think that’s why just reading doesn’t seem to be enough. I’ve found that I need to read over something and then go back through it again to really get a proper understanding of it. I guess you could call it an ‘active reading’. What it really is, is studying. When I’m reading to really learn the material I have to ask myself certain questions about the material. It’s kind of like an investigation. You ask yourself questions, “OK, what is this saying here? Why is it saying this here? How does this relate to what was said over here?” And in doing all of this you are kind of putting the pieces of a puzzle together. So, then in the end it all fits together. Just reading is a kind of mental exercise where you might understand what it’s saying, but you might not. Study gives you a more complete and thorough comprehension.

I think another thing study includes is an understanding of context. Even knowing what something says, and why, is not always enough. If you don’t understand the context in which something is said, you might miss the entire point. Context can be very important. So, thinking about the context, finding out a little background about it, can be very helpful in understanding what the material is saying. But that’s what I’ve learned about the value of studying. If I really want to understand something, I need to read it like it’s an investigation…..not like it’s a Sunday Morning newspaper.

…Let’s go deeper

One thing I’ve learned in reading my Bible is the value of studying it vs. just reading it. I approach it differently, now, than I used to. When you study, you can dig and dig through it to get more out of it each time. And an added benefit of this is that I not only understand it better, but remember it better as well.

AV 2 Timothy 2:15: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” The many advantages that studying the word of God has for us has it’s culmination in our being approved unto God. So much of the time we are concerned about how we appear to other people. But we don’t study to be approved unto men. But to begin to know God, we need to get to know His word. Our ultimate goal, and our ultimate aim is for us to get to know God. By studying His word with the direction of the Holy Spirit we can begin to rightly divide the word of truth.

AV Psalms 119:11: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” By getting to know God’s word we begin to get to know some guidelines. These things keep us from sinning against God. Not only that, it keeps us from getting into trouble. When we hide His word in our hearts it becomes a part of us. That’s when we do it. We begin to live out of our hearts what we truly believe.

AV Ezra 7:6: “This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he [was] a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.” Ezra is an example in the Bible of a man who knew God’s law. It called him a ‘ready scribe in the law of Moses’. That means he studied God’s word. Ezra responded to the call to rebuilding of the Temple of God. I believe this is part of the reason that Ezra was able to respond to the call. Because he knew God’s word. God can use someone who knows His word and help use that to draw the hearts of men back to God.

AV Psalms 119:105: NUN. “Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” When we study and properly apply what we know to do, that’s wisdom. Using God’s word as our guide book is helps us to avoid pitfalls and obstacles. It shows our feet where to step and it illuminates our path for us. It lights up a dark path. Because without it there would be no light. We would be wandering around in the dark. That’s why much of the world is stumbling around in the dark. Because they don’t have the light of God’s word shining in their hearts.

AV Psalms 119:9: BETH “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed [thereto] according to thy word.” The reason we can cleanse our way is because God’s word reveals to us where we have missed it. It points out our sin. It shows us the dirt, so that we can then get rid of it. When we know better, then we can do better.

AV 2 Timothy 2:15: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Just ‘MacGyver it’?

There was this show on TV in the ’80’s called MacGyver. I thought it was the coolest thing when I was a kid. It was about this guy who worked for this company. He was constantly placed in situations where he had to come up with unorthodox ways to get out of predicaments. So, the term ‘MacGyver it’ just refers to using something for other than its intended purpose.

If you ever watched MacGyver you would see him end up doing some pretty amazing things. He could take on a guy with a gun using a paper clip and chewing gum, or something crazy like that. Anyway, that’s just a made-up example. But he would do some things that were pretty cool. I admit, some of his methods strained credulity. But I guess, being a teenage boy, I didn’t care. The show was a unique concept because he was able to beat the bad guy with his mind instead of just brute force, I guess.

Regardless of my realization that ‘MacGyver’ was just a TV show, it hasn’t kept me from applying some of those tactics to my everyday binds I find myself in. I don’t always have the tools handy to apply a proper fix to things. So, I think, “I can fix it with some duct tape and a two by four.” I remember one time I applied a fix to my exhaust on my vehicle. The pipe had broken where it comes down from the manifold and starts to bend to run along the length of the vehicle. So, I had the bright idea thinking, “I’ll just put a wedge in there”, between the pipe and this brace that happened to be there. So I hammered this wedge in there before going on a rather long trip. It actually lasted for a while. It even lasted for a while after I had gotten to my destination. But eventually I hit a big enough bump and it knocked the wedge loose. You could tell right away, too. Because I suddenly had the loudest exhaust around. Not that I wanted to, either. It was a bit embarrassing to be honest.

I’ve learned something from these temporary fixes. They don’t usually last that long. And they might seem like a great idea at the time but they don’t hold up when put to the test. Upon further reflection, you find that applying the proper fix would have been the more prudent of options. It can be so tempting sometimes to just apply a quick fix to things, thinking it will be just as good. However, you find that the strength and longevity of the repair is directly proportional to the quality of that repair. Just slapping it back together again doesn’t usually work so well. It’s kind of like a lot of things in life. Time and care have to be applied if you want to have a lasting effect.

…Let’s go deeper

I think like a lot of our temporary fixes in life, we try to fill many of our eternal longings with temporary fixes. We each have an inner longing for God, but we sometimes try to fill that desire with things of this world. We don’t realize that those things are just temporary, and that eventually, those things will just fall apart.

AV John 6:35: “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” Jesus was often talking about spiritual things when people were still thinking on earthly things. We often have such a shallow concept of what it really means to be satisfied. Jesus is trying to bring us true fulfillment through Him. These things, these earthly things, they don’t give us what our heart truly desires. Some of them aren’t necessarily bad in themselves. Some of them we even need to live. We need food and water. But those things aren’t going to give us true fulfillment and true satisfaction in our souls. Those things are just temporary. But having Jesus is eternal satisfaction.

AV 2 Corinthians 4:18: “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.” It’s very easy to go by our natural vision. We trust what we see with our own eyes. But many times we’re not seeing with our spiritual eyes. By using our spiritual eyes, we look at things with an eternal perspective. We judge whether something is meaningful by whether it will have an eternal impact, rather than just a temporary one.

AV Colossians 3:2: “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” This verse refers to Heavenly things and earthly things. We often tend to get stuck thinking about the earthly. Those Heavenly things are easier to overlook because they aren’t always right in front of us. That’s why we need to keep them in the forefront of our minds. Those are the things that will last forever.

AV Psalm 107:9: “For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” When we seek God, and seek Him for our fulfillment, He will fill us with more of Himself. The more we are filled with Him, the more of His goodness comes out of us. And it’s what our heart truly longs for. Many times we are confused about what we really want. That’s why we expect things to satisfy us. But we don’t realize that they can’t truly fulfill, and they can’t fix our heart’s true longing.

AV Romans 15:13: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” This was Paul’s statement in Romans. Our true joy and peace are in believing—in believing that Christ died for us and sacrificed Himself on the cross. And this is where our hope lies. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to have hope, and also give hope to others. And this is the change that produces a lasting fulfillment in us.

AV John 6:35: “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

Experience brings hope

Experience has many valuable attributes. It’s more than just a learning tool for practical application of knowledge. Experience makes us hopeful because we learn from experience what is possible. Our worst fears and concerns can be overcome when we think about our past experiences.

Sometimes we easily forget the past. Mostly, we tend to remember the bad things that happened to us. We forget that few things happen that are as bad as imagined. We also easily forget the good things that have happened to us. One thing that experience alone has taught me is to be hopeful. I mean, after all the experiences I’ve been through, I’m still here aren’t I? The same goes for you. You might have been through many experiences that you thought were going to take you under. You didn’t know how you would ever make it through them. But you did come out on the other side. That’s how experience can make us hopeful for the future.

For this reason, I believe it’s good for us to sometimes sit down and take inventory. How many things do I have, and how many great experiences have I had, that have been better than I could have hoped? I think, if we do this, we would become thankful. We wouldn’t be as despondent and forlorn about the future as we often are. The tough thing about life is that we have to work at staying positive. We don’t have to work at being negative. That just comes naturally. I think there are a lot of reasons for this. But it’s kind of like growing a garden. You have to work at growing the stuff you want—like tomatoes, carrots, potatoes or cucumbers. It doesn’t take any work to grow the weeds. They just come up on their own. You don’t have to water those. In fact, if you want to have a healthy garden you have to do the opposite. You have to pull out the weeds and keep them from growing in order for your garden to be healthy. In like manner, our brains seem to amplify negative experiences and minimize positive ones. And when we’re in a negative experience for a long time, it can be even harder to stay positive.

I guess that’s why having a positive mindset is all the more important. I mean, once hope is gone, all that you have left is despair. Which isn’t very hopeful. And that’s why I believe experience is so invaluable. We can look back and say, “You know, this and this happened in the past. And the situation looked dark. But I came out of that OK.” There is some hope for the future because of what I’ve seen happen in the past. As bad as it looks now, there’s hope for a better future. The thing is, being in despair doesn’t do any good. We need to look towards a hope for the future. But where does our hope lie?

…Let’s go deeper

As much as staying positive can help, our hope needs to be in God. One thing God wants for us is not to just survive, but to thrive. Through Him, we have hope not only in making it through tough times, but also being fruitful and thriving in those hard times.

AV Romans 5:3-5: “And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” I would say our greatest hope for the future is seeing what God has done in the past. The experiences that God has brought us through helps us to grow in our trust in Him. When we see God come through for us one time, and another time, this builds our confidence in Him. We come to learn that God won’t let us down. That when times are difficult, He’s the one we can count on.

He says that unless he knew God would show up, He would have given up. There are times we go through that things are so bleak that, unless God shows up, there is no hope. He has to show up. And those are the times we learn that He is faithful. The Psalmist has learned through experience of God’s faithfulness. People can’t help you. The Government can’t help you. Some social welfare agency can’t help you. It’s only God, and He alone, that can come through for you. And that’s a good place to be in. For when you are truly depending on the Lord, that’s right where you need to be.

AV Psalms 39:7: “And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope [is] in thee.” Another Psalm restates this matter. He’s saying, “Where is my hope? It’s in you, God.” Also, I think of it this way: Where else would my hope be? What else would I be waiting for? You’re the only one that can help me. Honestly, this one realization will take us further than we can ever imagine. If we will just get this one thing down in our spirits, and truly understand this, we would be miles ahead in terms of facing struggles in life, and in our walk with God. Praying for Him to intervene, and then expecting Him to do what He said He will do is what it’s all about.

AV Romans 5:3-5: “And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

AV Psalms 27:13: “[I had fainted], unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.”

AV Psalms 39:7: “And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope [is] in thee.”

Never get excited

Never get excited. What does that mean? Am I saying to never be enthusiastic and happy about things? No, of course not. What I mean by that statement is to never get frantic, or worried, about something. Another way of putting it is: beside oneself. It’s actually a synonym listed if you look up the word excited. But the wisdom those three words hold has been proven in my own life.

This statement was advice given to me a long time ago. I’ve seen through countless circumstances in life how they have been proven to be true. When I look back on the circumstances in my life, I find that what I believed was cause for concern in the moment became only distant memories and teachable moments in retrospect. Perspective matters. Why does that thing, that once caused concern, no longer cause concern? I know one answer to that is obviously that the object of concern is no longer in effect. The danger has passed, in essence. But even though the danger has passed, knowing what we know in retrospect, we would no longer worry about even if we were currently in that moment. For one thing, most of what we were worried about never happened. And if what we were worried about did happen, we still wouldn’t be worried. We might be distressed, we might be saddened, but we wouldn’t be worried. Why? Because we know that the worry would have no effect on the outcome. What we are convinced has value in the moment, never has any value in retrospect.

Why do we find ourselves in these cycles of worry and despair? It goes from one thing, to the next, to the next, with little downtime in between. The only consolation the perpetual worrier has is that maybe the next worry won’t be quite so troublesome. They can’t wait for the next worry to come just so they no longer have to deal with the current one. But that’s no way to live. The energy expended on something such as worry is tough to calculate. But it could certainly be put to better use. It’s like riding a stationary bike. You’re spinning your wheels but you’re not going anywhere. But at least with the stationary bike you’re getting some exercise. Worry doesn’t even give you that benefit. It’s an improper use of the imagination.

‘Never get excited’ are three words that I have found to be helpful for me. Now, we can express concern over something. Concern is enough to get us motivated and moving to take action for a legitimate change we need to make. But it’s when it crosses over into worry that it becomes counter-productive. I believe worry is a trick. But it’s a compelling trick. It seems like such a worthy endeavor. But it doesn’t accomplish what we think it will. Instead of being helpful, it’s harmful. But we have an even greater reason not to worry. There’s a better way to approach our worries.

God gave us so many verses addressing worry and stress. I believe he’s wanting to make it clear to us how we really don’t need to worry. He showed us how to approach worry in His word.

AV Matthew 6:27: “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” ‘Taking thought’ here means ‘being anxious’ or ‘worried’. Jesus asks us an important question. He’s saying, “What can you really change by worrying about things?” The answer is obviously, ‘nothing’. So first, He wants us to see the fruitless endeavor that worry is.

AV 1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” Here we are told what to do with our worries. To cast means to ‘toss on’. That’s a good image, isn’t it? He’s literally wanting us to toss it over to Him. Give your worries and concerns over to Him. When we come to Him in prayer we first need to unload our worries on Him. Then we can ask Him in prayer to address that situation we were worried about. We can pray for Him to change it. For only He has the power to change, and turn around, that situation.

AV John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” The benefit that God gives us when we give Him our worries is peace. We can walk and live in peace because He has made us free through His son Jesus. When we receive the free gift of Salvation we have a peace that passes all understanding. We are to continue to walk in that peace. Any time we get worried about something or frantic, we aren’t walking in the way God intended for us.

AV Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Once we unload our worries on Him and have His peace, we just need to trust Him. We trust Him with our situation and our lives. We trust that He is in control of our lives. And that’s the main reason the Christian doesn’t need to worry: is because we trust that He is in charge and leading and guiding our lives to a good and positive end.

AV Matthew 6:27: “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?”

AV 1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

AV John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

AV Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

It’s not ‘My way or the highway’, it’s ‘My way is the “High”way’

I think we’ve all seen or been in situations where an ultimatum has been given. We’ve all seen the situation where a father says to a rebellious son or daughter, “As long as you live under my roof, you’ll live under my rules.” Maybe some of us were that rebellious son or daughter.

But what’s the father saying in this situation? Is he just trying to throw his weight around? Is it just an attempt to kill their fun? Well, if we look at the motivation behind this statement, it’s really a statement of love. A true father doesn’t want to see their children get hurt. The rules are there for their own protection and welfare. I think when you are young and still living at home it’s difficult for you to see this. Often as we get older we begin to appreciate more and more the wisdom of our parents. We have a clearer understanding of what they were trying to do. They weren’t trying to keep us from having fun, or just being bossy. They were trying to protect us. Usually it’s our own immaturity that clouds our vision and keeps us from being able to see this reality at the time. But as kids we don’t know enough to see the wisdom of their words.

The privilege of living under your father’s roof comes with certain parameters added. The involvement of parameters seem like restrictions. A baby could see the bars of their crib like a prison. Of course, they aren’t. They are just there to keep them out of trouble. Who knows what kinds of trouble we would have gotten into without those bars. That baby needs those barriers to keep them from making bad decisions.

When the father says, “As long as you live under my roof, you’ll live under my rules”, it sounds to us like it’s just an ultimatum. What it really shows is guidance and love. Just try to think of the alternative. Think of a father continuing to allow a child to live under their roof with no restrictions whatsoever. The chaos that could ensue would be overwhelming. What we saw as a child as being restrictive was actually an act of love.

What this father is saying in this sentence isn’t, “It’s my way or the highway.” What he’s really saying is, “My way is the “High”way.” Or, “My way is the best way.” The father knows the best way because he has more knowledge. He’s not just shooting from the hip, barking out random orders and demands. They each have a purpose and a reason behind them. Those guidelines are for our benefit that will give us to the best opportunity for a happy and peaceful life. But the wisdom of our father’s words don’t often resonate with us until later in life. It can take some time before we realize that those words were the truth.

Whether some in this world like to believe it or not, there is a moral right and wrong. Those things are clearly labelled and set out for us in the Bible. God determines and lets us plainly know what those things are. Just like any other civil law we follow, God has given us a law and guiding principles.

AV Matthew 9:36: “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.” I never paid much attention to this in this verse before, but it says here that Jesus had compassion on the multitude because they were ‘as sheep having no shepherd’. If you think about it, that is something to be pitied. How do people know the right direction without someone to guide them? Without a set of moral principles, how do people keep from getting themselves into trouble? God’s laws are meant to keep us out of trouble. They are there because He loves us and not because He’s trying to keep something from us. And Jesus is the shepherd of our souls.

AV Isaiah 5:20: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” The Bible talks about this happening in the last days. And this is much of what we are seeing today. The very idea of good is being turned on its head. The guiding principles have been removed, so now there’s no one to determine what’s what anymore. Many in this world are as sheep without a shepherd. But it’s because they don’t want a shepherd. They have rejected the Great Shepherd. And when you reject Him, there’s nothing left to guide you. You have no compass, because He is true north.

AV Psalms 32:8: “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” This is God’s word to us, if we will allow Him to do so. God will guide and direct us. Since He is good and in Him there is no darkness at all, we can rely and depend on His guidance. When we submit, I believe God will counsel and direct us, like a teacher in a class. So, when we start out on the straight and narrow path He will correct us and teach us when we get off track. He will keep His eye on us.

AV John 16:13: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” The Holy Spirit guides and directs us into all truth. The only thing we will hear from the Holy Spirit is truth. Not only that, He will show us things we need to know. He will even show us things to come in the future and things we need to prepare for.

AV John 8:32: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Once we know the truth we are made free. The reason is because evil puts you in bondage, but knowledge of truth is freeing. Evil is not the opposite of good. It is merely the absence of that which is good. That’s why morals degrade when that which is good is removed. That’s why we need Jesus. He’s wanting to be our Great Shepherd. But we have to allow Him to be. He wants us to give up control so that He can show us that He is the way, the truth, and the life.

AV Matthew 9:36: “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.”

AV John 8:32: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Purpose gives meaning

Purpose is an important element of life. I don’t know how many people know their purpose, or even believe they have a purpose. Some may have wondered what their purpose is but have given up on trying to discover it.

Purpose is a part of something that helps make you feel valuable. When you know you have a place in the grand scheme of things you are more mindful of what you’re doing. You’re not wandering around aimlessly through life. I would guess that’s why so many people are wandering around aimlessly through life. They don’t have a purpose, or know what it is. This makes finding it out even more important.

Often times this lines up with what they are passionate about. It also goes along with areas where they are gifted. Many times we’re fighting against our purpose because we’re doing something that doesn’t fit either of those two criteria. I think it’s a part of knowing yourself as well. You have to know if some career you choose is going to be something you can see yourself doing for 40 years. Some are gifted designers. So, they pursue a career in some type of design. They are able to envision something in their minds and then bring it into being. Architects and interior designers have this ability. Others are really good with numbers. These people might end up as accountants or mathematicians. They most likely enjoy what they are doing because they are good at these things. And the rest of us can be glad that they are good at these things because if we had to do their jobs…..well, the results would just be less than favorable. We would end up with some really messed up buildings and some really messed up finances.

The great thing is, that once we start to step into our purpose, it starts to just flow. It just comes naturally because it’s a natural extension of who we are. And you don’t have to fight to make it work. I think sometimes we are trying to be good at something we were never meant to do. It’s a fight and struggle. And it shouldn’t be that way. I mean, it will be a challenge, but it won’t be an overbearing task. Those natural gifts and talents will just kick in and the pieces will start to fit.

The idea that we all are gifted at something points to something else. These gifts had to come from somewhere. We didn’t just decide to be gifted. I believe that these abilities were given to us and that they were given to us so we would have purpose and meaning. Otherwise, we do wander around aimlessly. But once we know we start to feel valuable. We feel valuable because we know we have a purpose. And purpose gives us meaning.

…Let’s go deeper

You have a divine purpose. There isn’t just a something you were gifted to do as an everyday career. There is also a purpose you have in the divine work of God. We, as members of His body, are to fill different roles in fulfilling His plan here on earth. But we have to choose to accept and take on that role in our lives.

AV Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Part of our fulfilling the roles God has planned for us involves renewing our mind. The way we renew our mind is by getting our minds in line with the Word of God. We have to fight to keep our thinking in line with what is right. We have too many things trying to get our minds going in the wrong direction. When we get our thinking in line with God’s thinking we will face opposition, but we will know that we are on the right path and then we can start fulfilling His purpose.

AV Matthew 6:33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” This verse is talking about some of the things we tend to worry about. We can wonder sometimes where our food or clothing are going to come from. God’s clear answer to us is, “Seek me first and I’ll take care of all these other things.” We tend to think our purpose is to go to work and make a living But, no, our purpose is to fulfill His purposes.

AV Colossians 3:23: “And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” When we do things, it also matters why we do them. Our motives should always be with having the Lord in mind. We easily fall into the trap of trying to please people. But pleasing God and pleasing people can often work at cross purposes. We need to please God and not people. when we act with the motive of pleasing God, He is pleased by it and we can also know that we are doing it for the right reasons. We can also know if what we’re doing is right. Because if we can’t do it as unto the Lord, then we shouldn’t be doing it.

AV Philippians 3:10: “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” Our purpose should be God’s purpose. And God’s purpose for us is to be changed into the image of Christ. Knowing Him and, once we are saved, we experience the power of His resurrection, we then fellowship in His sufferings as we suffer for His cause, and we are made conformable unto death as we die to ourselves so that we can become conformed to His image.

AV Psalms 138:8: “The LORD will perfect [that which] concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, [endureth] for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.” When we choose to commit ourselves to Christ, God will bring us to perfection and continue to make us godly. The work of the Holy Spirit helps in this matter. We get cleaned up and growed up in Him. This brings us to our ultimate purpose—His purpose for us. And this is the true purpose that gives us true meaning. God is looking to make more sons and daughters that our conformed to the image of His dear Son.
