Let’s go deeper—Is there a better answer than the one you already have?

If we’re looking for answers, the source for our answers matters. Some sources are unreliable, but God’s Word has stood the test of time. We find that in our search for truth the best answers will stand the test of time. They don’t buckle when being pressed. And when our society wages the assault on truth, and the smoke clears, the truth is the only one left standing.

Acts 17:23: “For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.” The Apostle Paul, in speaking to the Athenians, discovered some of them had an interest in discovering truth. Paul was there to declare it to them. This sign ’TO THE UNKNOWN GOD’ gave him the open door to reveal the one true God—the maker of Heaven and Earth. He showed them the answer they had been looking for, if they should truly hope to find it.

Luke 11:20: “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.” Jesus didn’t just expect people to believe; He gave them solid reasons to believe. As shown here, a demonstration of His power reveals to them the best answer is that He was sent from God. The doubts and deliberations don’t hold water when you truly weigh the evidence. Jesus doesn’t only appeal to our hearts, but to our heads as well. A mind, whose barriers to belief have been removed, makes clear for the heart to willingly receive.

1 Corinthians 15:19: “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” Paul weighed the possibility of some who were saying there was no resurrection of the dead. He worked the problem to its logical conclusion, and it ended up in futility. No resurrection meant there was nothing to believe in, as it would mean that Christ wasn’t risen either. The whole of the Christian faith rests upon this one truth. Without the resurrection of Christ, there is no redemption and, thus, no resurrection for believers either. Paul shows them that their faith is in vain if this is what they believe. But he also shows that this belief is not reasonable, that the faith we hold in Christ is profitable not only for this life, but the life to come.

1 Corinthians 13:11: “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” Some belief systems get ingrained in us from when we were very young. They have always been and, unless examined, will never be discarded. We learn through experience the truths that shave away at our naivety. Those things we thought profitable when young no longer serve a purpose in the harsh extremes of reality. And we find that the answer we had always held wasn’t necessarily the best one.

1 Corinthians 12:31: “But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” The use of the gifts in the Church spoken by Paul was an important means of edifying believers. But what he speaks of in the last half of this verse is alluding to what he spends the next entire chapter addressing—love. All things, whatever we do in Christ—if not done in love, miss the entire point and message of Christ. If we aren’t acting in an attitude of love then we aren’t living out the best, and providing the best answer for others. That answer is always the one based on the love of Christ—the one He has shown toward us so that we can extend it to others.
