…Let’s go deeper—If you get to know me, you might like me

When I was thinking about our culture’s reluctance in reaching out to others, I began relating this to God and how He must feel. Since I thought that others would like me once they got to know me, I began to wonder if God felt the same way of Himself. I wondered if God thought, “If people would just take the time to get to know me, they would like me?” I couldn’t help but think He did.

Philippians 3:10: “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” This was the desire of Paul that he expressed to the Philippians. Paul, in getting to know God, desired to get to know Him more. He wanted to know Him and also to fellowship with Him. That’s where an emotional connection and friendship develops, along with a spiritual development.

James 4:8: “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.” A greater closeness to God requires a greater cleanness of our hearts. The closer we get to Him, the more apparent our sin becomes. Maybe that is part of our concern in getting closer to Him. But it’s not something we need to fear. He is there ready and waiting for us to turn these things over to Him.

John 12:32: “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me.” Jesus, being lifted up on the Cross of Calvary, was actually drawing the world unto Himself. This act of obedience and surrender to the Father was meant to lead us to act in obedience and surrender to Him. And what we couldn’t do for ourselves, He did for us.

Psalms 119:10: “With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.” This prayer from the 119th Psalm contains what should be our hearts desire—seeking God whole-heartedly with a pure heart before Him. This is key to keeping us on the right path. To stay in tune with Him and keeping His commandments, and being obedient all go hand-in-hand.

Proverbs 3:6: ‘In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Our acknowledgement of Him is really an all-encompassing act. We involve Him in every part of our lives. Our decisions, our contemplating, our deliberations are all chances to involve Him in our lives. What He promises in return is to direct us in these things. In giving Him the opportunity to lead us, He also gives us the opportunity to get to know Him and be grateful for all the ways He’s directed our path.
