…Let’s go deeper—Sometimes perfect is the way you did it the first time

Matthew 5:48: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” This may make a lot of people’s heads spin the first time they read this verse. But again, I think we need to gain a proper understanding of the term ‘perfect’. And more importantly, we need to gain a proper understanding of what God means by perfect. When we look throughout the entire Bible we see a theme where God’s ultimate concern is with the condition of our hearts. If we’re thinking about our actions being perfect, we might as well forget it. But what God desires in us is to perfect our hearts. This begins at the point of the new birth. There’s a sanctification process that happens from there where we become trained in righteousness.

Matthew 5:8: “Blessed [are] the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” The pure in heart described here are the ones who come to him with an honest and pure heart. They are the ones who come to Him as they are and with no pretense. The Bible says that when we do this we will see Him. That means He will reveal Himself to us. He will reveal Himself to us in our situations and in our hearts.

James 3:2: “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same [is] a perfect man, [and] able also to bridle the whole body.” One of the toughest things to get in line is our mouths. It’s so easy to say something we shouldn’t have said, or something that we regret later. One way we can know we are really learning to keep our flesh in subjection to our spirit is by being able to bridle our tongues.

1 John 2:1: “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” One thing we always need to remember is that when we do miss it and sin that we have an advocate in Jesus. Those times when we don’t act correctly or act from a right heart are washed away when we confess and bring them to Him.

Romans 8:14: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Being led by the Spirit of God is the ultimate form of perfection. A perfect heart acting in concert with the heart of God. The results may not always come out perfect, or appear perfect. But when we act and are led by the Spirit of God we can know that we have done the right thing regardless of the results.
