In essence, God tells us in His Word that we all start out in the same boat. And the standard that is set for righteousness, or a right way of living, is the one set by Him. We don’t get to declare it ourselves. God has declared His standard in His word. And if we are wise we will look at, and follow, what it has to say.
James 2:10: “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all.” Here’s the standard. God’s Law requires us to keep all of it, or we don’t keep any of it. We could keep all of God’s Laws and just miss one of them and we would be guilty. You might think, “Well, that sounds impossible. Who can do that?” But wait, there’s more.
Isaiah 64:6: “But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” This tells us that we can’t meet the standard on our own—that we can never measure up. It shows us that our sins have separated us from God—that our own efforts of righteousness can never measure up. To declare our righteousness ‘as filthy rags’ really puts this into context for us.
Isaiah 53:6: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” This states that all of us have gone astray from Him, from His ways, and from His Law. We have willfully went our own way instead of God’s way. The last part of this verse says that God has ‘laid the on Him the iniquity of us all’. Well, who’s the ‘Him’ he’s talking about? Well, this next verse tells us.
Romans 5:17: “For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)” If we can’t save ourselves, then it would seem as though someone else would have to. Good point. That’s where Jesus Christ comes in. This first part of the verse is referring to Adam—the sin of Adam. It tells us that sin—and therefore the consequence for sin—reigned over us all through the sin of Adam. Man was created perfect from the beginning, but through Adam’s sin the curse of sin had dominion over us. But the good news is where it says ‘much more’. That ‘much more’ is referring to the grace offered us through Christ and His death on the cross. But how do we receive this grace?
1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” It comes through our confession of our sin. We confess our sins, and then repent—or turn from—that sin, to receive by faith the free gift of salvation. We confess the predicament we’re in. We confess our helplessness without Him. We come in humility to the cross. We have to recognize we all start out in the same boat—that Christ is our lifeboat. That’s the true situation. And that’s the true context in which to view it.
